It can be quite confronting and overwhelming seeing a psychologist for the first time. It is totally normal to feel nervous and anxious prior to your first session, but rest assured, we will always prioritise your feelings. At Believe In U, it is very important to us that you always feel comfortable and safe when in session.
Your first Psychology session will be primarily based around our Psychologist getting to know you a little better. This may include questions about your life, your childhood, your current work situation, your family and friends and your interests.
The first session also provides an opportunity for you to discuss what you hope to gain from Psychology and set some goals you hope to achieve.

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, is a therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process traumatic experiences and distressing memories in a safe, structured way.
It’s widely used to support those who have experienced significant stress, trauma, or negative life events, often leading to a reduction in symptoms like anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or feelings of helplessness.
EMDR uses eye movements and other forms of bilateral stimulation to assist in reprocessing difficult memories, transforming them from disturbing or overwhelming to manageable and integrated parts of one’s personal history.
-
EMDR therapy is built around the concept that the brain can heal from psychological trauma similarly to how it recovers from physical injuries. When a disturbing event occurs, it may be stored in a way that disrupts normal processing and leaves one feeling “stuck” or emotionally reactive. Through a structured eight-phase approach, EMDR helps "unstick" these memories, promoting healing by guiding the mind to reframe and reprocess experiences.
The therapist will guide you through a series of sessions that include phases for assessment, preparation, desensitisation, and reprocessing. By focusing on the traumatic memory while engaging in eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, the brain naturally begins to reprocess the memory, often reducing its emotional charge.
-
EMDR is commonly used for individuals who have experienced:
Trauma or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Anxiety or Panic Disorders
Depression
Grief and Loss
Distressing memories that feel unresolved
This therapy is highly adaptable and can be tailored to each individual's unique experiences and needs. It’s appropriate for those who may not have responded to traditional talk therapy or who find it difficult to discuss their trauma in depth.
